Here’s how to supercharge your slow laptop

There are few things that are more annoying than a slow laptop. However, there are always a few techniques you can use, to eke out the most out of your old laptop. Here are a few ways you can boost your slow laptop.

Upgrade your laptop

Upgrade your laptop

One sure-fire way to speed up your laptop is by upgrading it. You can always add more RAM to the system and get a quick boost in speed. However. If you are using an old mechanical drive, then you should consider upgrading to an SSD. Since they use flash storage rather than optical drives, SSDs are much faster and your computer would be able to boot up in seconds instead of minutes. However, SSDs are more expensive than HDD, and if you have a laptop that has a free slot for a hard disk, then you may want to consider buying a smaller size SSD in which you can install Windows.

Get rid of start-up programs

One of the reasons why laptops take so long to start up is because of the applications that you install on them. Most of these automatically start running when you start up Windows. However, that isn’t necessary, and these end up unnecessarily using up your resources. Programs, such as Google Drive or Skype can be manually started and do not need to be constantly on. While others like your antivirus software, do need to turn it on when you boot up Windows. In order to see which programs are running during start-up, open the ‘Task Manager’ by pressing ctrl + alt + del. Then click the ‘Start up’ button to see the list of programmes. Right-click on any unwanted programs and disable them.

Reduce visual effects

Windows 10 is a pretty good-looking operating system with several nifty animations as you navigate through it. But in reality, you don’t need those animations, when you just want to get the work done. To turn off these animations, right-click on My PC and open properties. Then click on ‘Advanced system settings’ and in the new popup window, select ‘Settings’ in the performance section. The new popup will let you manually select the animations that you want, or you can just select the option for best performance.

Increase Virtual Memory

Windows will temporarily move some data from RAM to a paging file on your hard drive. This is done when your device doesn’t have enough physical memory to run a program. By default, the system automatically manages the paging file side for the drives. However, you can manually increase the amount of space this paging file takes up in order to boost the system. To do this, head over to ‘My PC’ and open its ‘Properties’. Then, click on ‘Advanced System Settings’ to open a new pop-up window. Then click on the ‘Settings’ option in the ‘Performance’ section. This will open another pop-up window where you will have to head towards the ‘Advanced’ tab. There, click on the ‘Change’ button under the ‘Virtual Memory’ section. This will open yet another popup window. Here, uncheck the ‘Automatically manage paging file size for all drives’ option and then select ‘Custom size’. Now you will be able to set the amount of memory you wish to allocate.

Defrag your hard disk

Over time, your hard disk may end up with empty pockets of space on the optical disk as data is stored, copied, and removed. These pockets slow down your laptop as your system has to comb through more of the drive in order to find information that should ideally be located closer together. Defragmentation rearranges data on your disk, making it easier and faster for your computer to access them. You should ideally defrag your drive once a month. However, if you have a Solid-State Drive (SSD), then you do not need to defrag it.

Use a portable hard disk or DVD burner

You can move the additional data that you do not use on an everyday basis to a portable hard disk or DVD burner thereby freeing space on your laptop, which will definitely give its performance a boost. You can head to Lenovo’s virtual shop for some great deals on hard disks and DVD burners, here’s the link.
