Top 6 tips to create more storage space on your laptop

It doesn’t matter what size hard disk your laptop came with; you are going to run out of storage space sometime or the other. How fast you run out of storage depends on how you use the laptop. Even the system itself will start taking up more and more space as it starts piling up cache and other temporary files. If you find yourself running low on space, here are some ways you can free up some storage space.

Disable System Restore

If you are really desperate for space, then you might want to consider disabling System Restore. This feature is used to revert to a previous version of Windows in case something goes wrong. As such, it keeps copies of current files on the system. Disabling this feature will free up that space, but you may get into trouble if you need to use it. So, keep this as a last resort. If you want, you can also consider simply reducing the amount of storage allocated to System Restore. The trade-off is that you will get fewer system restore points. This can be a decent compromise between saving storage space and system protection. To do this, head over to the properties of ‘My PC’ and select the ‘System Protection’ tab.

NAS

If you really want to have more storage space, but simply cannot delete files on your laptop, then you should consider purchasing Network Assisted Storage (NAS) box. Think of it as a step above getting an external drive. Instead of connecting the drive to your laptop, you’ll be connecting it to your router to become a part of your network. So, any other PC or laptop that is connected to the same network will be able to access the files stored in the NAS box. Some models can also be accessed via mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets. NAS boxes can be a little pricey, but there are some models without any drives, which are a bit cheaper and let you use your own hard drives.

Reduce virtual memory size

Your computer will temporarily move some data from RAM to a paging file on your hard drive. This is done when your device doesn’t have enough physical memory to run a programme, hence that space is called virtual memory. By default, Windows automatically manages the paging file size for the drives. However, you can manually limit the amount of space this paging file takes up. To do this, head over to ‘My PC’ and open its ‘Properties’. Then, click on ‘Advanced System Settings’ to open a new pop-up window. Then click on the ‘Settings’ option in the ‘Performance’ section. This will open another pop-up window where you will have to head towards the ‘Advanced’ tab. There, click on the ‘Change’ button under the ‘Virtual Memory’ section. This will open yet another (and the final) popup window. Here, uncheck the ‘Automatically manage paging file size for all drives’ option and then select ‘Custom size’. Now you will be able to set the amount of memory you wish to allocate.

Move to the cloud

Now that you can get an internet connection almost anywhere, you should consider moving some files like photos and videos to the cloud. Not only will this help you clean up some space on your laptop but will also give you the option to access these files from a variety of other devices like smartphones, tablets or even someone else’s laptop. Another benefit you get by storing files to the cloud is that you always have a backup in case your disk is damaged, and you lose your data. There are a bunch of services which offer you free cloud storage. Google Drive offers 15GB of free storage, while OneDrive and Dropbox offer 5GB and 2GB respectively. However, you can always expand the storage space you get by paying a subscription fee.

Browser-based software

There are some programmes like that you should always have on your laptop. However, instead of installing this basic software on your laptop and letting them take up valuable storage space, you should consider shifting to browser-based software. Instead of using Microsoft Office, try using Google Docs. For your photo editing needs, you should check out Pixlr, a capable replacement for Photoshop.

Use a portable hard disk or DVD burner

You can move the additional data that you do not use on an everyday basis to a portable hard disk or DVD burner thereby freeing space on your laptop, which will definitely give its performance a boost. You can head to Lenovo’s virtual shop for some great deals on hard disks and DVD burners.
